Let’s Go Bananas! Help Set a Record!

Between noon on Friday March 6th and noon on Saturday March 7th, the Fairtrade Foundation is aiming to set a World Record for the largest number of Fairtrade bananas eaten in a twenty-four hour period. Come and buy a Fairtrade banana (while stocks last) or bring your own. Eat it at the stand in The Mall between 10 and 12 noon and be counted in our own record attempt.

Why Bananas?

Bananas symbolise the challenges in international trade. Many people who grow and harvest bananas endure very poor working and living conditions and their local environment is often ruined by toxic chemicals and intensive farming. Producers of other foods and drinks  on which our lifestyles depend (eg cocoa, sugar, tea, coffee, nuts and pineapples) are often experiencing similar conditions. The pay is often no more than a dollar a day and many families do not have access to clean water, education or health care. One in four bananas bought in the UK is now Fairtrade.  As part of their campaigning activity, Tipping the Balance, the Fairtrade Foundation is aiming to make half of all the bananas sold in the UK Fairtrade by 2012.  Their message is: “This world record will make it absolutely clear to retailers: we all want Fairtrade bananas, for us, for producers, for the planet.  Please join us”.
